The 23rd Provincial Championships provided plenty of action at the South Shore Exhibition in Bridgewater. Mark Crouse was the only double champion. The most exciting classes were the left hand lightweight and right hand super heavyweight classes. One of the things that I (Ed) noticed on Saturday was the emotion. The feelings are so apparent when a competitor wins or loses. Whether it’s a “favourite to win” taking a loss or that underdog taking a huge win and putting on a great performance, the emotion that is created is truly awesome.
Artie MacMaster took the left hand lightweight. This was the largest class with 12 entries. Tim Wrigley was the favourite heading into the championships, but some tough early matches took too much out of him, to give Artie much trouble in the final. Greg Harnish captured his 20th Right Hand Provincial title. Greg had to come off the “B” side after an early loss to Mark MacPhail to come back and beat Shawn Ross twice in the Finals.
